Free Agent Wars
Dusty went off! He's down to $43 and spent a whopping $46 this week alone! Wow. Lots of activity these first 3 weeks. I think Todd should rename his team to Second place by a $1. He missed out on Acosta by $1 last week and Sanchez this week.
We also had the first trade of the year from Jim and Dusty. Looks like Dustin isn't waiting around to make changes.

Dustin's Draft Analysis - The Good, Bad, and Ugly
Andy-(UGLY) Giles at $15. But at the time he needed OF's and there was none left. (BAD) There really wasn't anyone, but if I had too chose it would be cordero(Keeper) at $20. (GOOD) Towles $4. I really didn't like catchers in this years draft, but this for four is a steal and future keeper. Honorable mention Rasmus $7.
Calvin- (Ugly) Willingham at $21. I don't know what was going on,but calvin must love this guy or think he'll a breakout year.(BAD) Only Lyons at $8. He'll probably lose his closer role and be moved to 7th inning duty. (Good) Zambrano at $20. Other top flight starters with k potential(that were young in age) were going for more. This guy on this team will have a breakout year.
Kelley- (Ugly) Gagne at $11. Future set up guy with bust all over him. (Bad) Gallrado at $19. I know he is a future stud, but he is injured and you could of kept him at $10.That is my only complaint.
(Good) Wright $40. Now kelley has the two best third baseman in the national league.I don't think hitting will be a problem this year for kelley. Honorable mention Peavy at $27.Ring up another cy young for him.
Dan- (Ugly) Dan's pitching staff. Dude he'll win hitting, but he should draft nine guys in the minors and start them.At least you would win e.r.a and whip. (Bad) Kemp at $20. With all the hype around this guy and the year he's going to have, just too rotate with pierre and either. Now I might be wrong and the dodgers our showcasing pierre for a trade. I don't think so though. Old torre loves veterans like old dusty.(good) reynolds at $11. This is good hitter 3 bagger in a hitter's ballpark. Honorable mention bourne and or the kouz(damn I should of kept him for 9)
Todd- (Ugly) Todd did a good job and I really can't find an ugly, But if I had to..let's go with jimenez for $10. Any rockies pitcher for more than five dollars is asking for trouble.(Bad) Wagner for $21. Old,Old and Old. I know you needed a closer and he is on the mets, but look at him...he is sooooo old.(Good) Your OF(not including pierre, but including kearns) You have power and some speed.I love milledge. Just a good combination. At first I over looked your hitting, but know I Know you will do well in those catergories.
Matt- (Ugly) PJM for $9. I Know he was a keeper, but this dude is a walking DL. I think him and wagner should open a vet's office and start putting down old dogs. Maybe the cockfighting has his mind on thoer things. (Bad) Francouer at $26. Paid just a little too much for a 20 homer guy batting sixth. (Good) Jackson at $10. Off the dr.pepper and into fantasy heaven, This guy is a stud and will get 25 homers and 90 RBI. Hinorable mention Bruce at $6 future kepper.
Trev- (Ugly) I have two players for him. One his his famous keeper..Lidge $13. This guy should look up wagner and PJM at the office, I'm sure they have an opening for a choke artist. the dogs have to go down some way. Zito at $3. It's only three dollars he
says. Dude what A waste of $126 million. Stash this guy untill sept. call ups. Onlt then would I have let him see the light of day. (Bad)
Bay at $20. Injury prone and on a bad team. That simple.
(Good) Zimmerman at $24. This guy will put up david wright numbers in the new ballpark. A pure stud in a revamped line up with nick johnson protecting him, there is no limit for this 23 year old.
Jason- (Ugly) Now if I had to give an anal(kaz matsui)ysis of his team it would be too many $1 players. If these players don't produce than I would say only a top four finish for jason. Has six very good plyers and three down right nasty SP's It takes more than that too win. (Bad) Matsui at $6. It's only six, butt being out coorado will make his hitting worse which he won't get on base as often to steal the 20-30 bases jason desires. (Good) Votto for $10. If only dusty baker would like rookies.
Jim- (ugly) Church for $18. I do like this guy at $7-8, but not at milledge, hall and fukudome money.I know it was at that point in the draft, but $18. (Bad) Upton for $20. Agian, this guy is a fantasy sleeper stud. We just haven't seen him enough and the league hasn't adjusted to him just yet.Hopefully he goes off for jim so he would not have to keep chuerch at $18 next year.Honorable mention Andy La roche. (Good) I love ankiel, but this is about nick johnson at $14. This might sound like I love the Nat's, but I just think johnson and zimmerman will put up very good numbers this year.
Dustin- (Ugly) Wood for $9. This guy is waiting for his application at the vet's office to be approved.it was denied since you at least need to show up at least twice to work in a three year span.(Bad) Two guys come too mind..Wilson At $5 and Winn At $8. I wanted winn for the 15-15 season, but I forgot who he played for that he is 33 years old. Wilson is a dude waiting to be traded and on a bad team.
(Good) I beleive my pitching staff will be very good. Two closers in waiting for a total of $4 dollars. 4 proven winning pitchers and a maybe the fantasy rookie of the year in cueto.Honorable mention Corey patterson for $2,dusty loves this guy from the cub days.(this dude will get 15-20 homers and steal 25-30 bases this year for 2 dollars)

Joe DiMaggio's streak analyzed
"In a fit of scientific skepticism, we decided to calculate how unlikely Joltin' Joe's achievement really was. Using a comprehensive collection of baseball statistics from 1871 to 2005, we simulated the entire history of baseball 10,000 times in a computer. In essence, we programmed the computer to construct an enormous set of parallel baseball universes, all with the same players but subject to the vagaries of chance in each one."

Finals Round 1, Jim is down big

Jim needs a 9.5 - 2.5 win to take the championship. Kelley just needs to hang on to take his first title since 1999.
Since I didn't get a chance last week, here's the latest playoff bracket:
Tuesday, September 18, 2007
Finals are set
Kelley 10 - Dan 2
The final results for this week were very close, but all of the chips fell right for Kelley and he pulled out the huge win against Dan. Dan's pitching let him down as he could only muster 27 IP. Lots of runs though.
Jim 7.5 - Matt 4.5
Total hitting domination from Jim dispelled any hopes of a comeback from Matt. Jim is looking very strong this post-season.

Round 3 (semis), Week 1
Dan 9.5 - Kelley 2.5Wow. Amazing week by Dan. He is poised to pull off his second major upset of the playoffs and be the lowest seeded team to make the finals (Jason was the #5 seed last season when he won).
Kelley must feel like he can't buy a break. He hits 15 HRs and Dan hits 17. He gets 4 SBs and Dan gets 6. And after his SPs just got like 8 wins in one week, they come up with only one win. It will be tough for Kelley to come back from this one down 9.5 - 2.5, but its possible.
Jim 8 - Matt 4
Jim quietly is rolling through the playoffs. Not a commanding lead in week one, but there's definitely some breathing room. He is looking to make his second Finals appearance in three years.

FKAky advance
It looks like we will be playing the 7th seed Pickle Weasels this week as they upsetted the defending champions.
Playoffs Round 2, Week 2
Much like last year, the #5 team moved on. Unlike last year, the #1 team is still intact to face the #5 team.
Jim beat Calvin to squeak into the second round. Even though they tied after two week, both winning one game 7-5, Jim moved on due to having the higher seed.
Dan blew out to a huge week one lead and head the lead in week two for a comfortable win. So the big upset this year is the #2 losing to the #7 team (me losing to Dan).
Kelley beat Brian fairly comfortably and will have to face the upset minded Pickle Weasels.
Round 3 should be interesting. Will Matt make it into the money after publicly declaring his season over in week 6? Will Kelley finally make it into the money after coming so close last season? Can Jim get into his second finals in 3 years? Or can Dan become the lowest seed ever to make it into the finals?

Interesting Article about trade deadline pickups
"In general, waiting on one player to lift your Roto team to a championship is a long-shot proposition. The strongest teams are assembled over the course of the season, and the most valuable free agent acquisitions are the ones made early in the season, when they have several months, not weeks, to contribute."

Playoffs Round 1, Week 1
Meanwhile, Calvin just held on against Todd to get the early lead in week 1. A veerrrry close week. Should be an interesting week 2.
2.0 Dustin's Diggleturb
10.0 Dan's Pickle Weasels
5.0 Todd's Heaters
7.0 Calvin's Slumpbusters
Thursday, August 09, 2007
Playoffs Round 1 Update
8.0 Calvin's Slumpbusters
4.0 Todd's Heaters
Todd isn't that far behind and with 3 wins and a great pitching week so far, he could make a comeback. Calvin is up early on the strength of Garrett Atkins who has 7 RBI and is hitting .875 in two days and Felipe Lopez who has 2 HRs and is batting .625.
10.0 Dan's Pickle Weasels
2.0 Dustin's Diggleturb
Dustin isn't doing bad in hitting so he's got a shot to make things closer. Unfortunately Ryan Howard (2 HRs), Troy Tulowitzki (2 HRs .666 BA), and new acquisition Luis Castillo (.429 BA) are hot this week. Its the pitching that isn't even close so far. Dustin has a shot there too though because Dan has no wins and Dustin has had no starters pitch.

Playoff Bracket filled out and weekly points results and analysis

Check out Dustin. He seemed to rarely go outside his 5-7 point range. He hardly ever lost by more than 7-5 until the last three weeks of the season. He needed to draft two more categories!
Who's hot at the end of the season? Jim, Kelley, Matt, Brian, and Calvin are all over .500 in the last 5 weeks of the season.
How about Brian's start to the season? Three 10-2 wins and three ties. Wild.
Here's the Playoff bracket:

So the first two weeks will be:
Calvin vs. Todd
Dan vs. Dustin
Everyone else gets a bye for round 1.
Week 18 Results (Final Regular Season Games)

Playoff Bracket

That means the top six teams will get a bye in the first round (first two weeks).
If two teams tie then in the regular season standings, then the first tie breaker is head-to-head points in each week. For example, two teams are 1-1. The first week, team A won 9-3. The second week, team B won 7-5. Team A gets the higher seed.
In three way ties (or more), I'm not exactly sure of the best way to calculate. I'll post something on the Google-group. I'm thinking that we could use largest win differential (over the course of a season - points for/points against). But that may be a pain to calculate. Otherwise it will be some crazy head-to-head-to-head formula. That might be easier to calculate.
For now I think I'll go with head-to-head-to-head. If there's not a clear winner (no one team beat all other teams its tied with, then go with season point differential.
Whew!

Chris Carpenter
How's that five-year extension looking now? The Cardinals gave Carpenter a $63.5 million deal last winter, even though he was already under control through 2008. Maybe he'll come back and be something worth close to that. However, as many arm problems as he's had over the course of his career, there's just no guarantee that he'll ever again be a dominant starter. Tommy John surgery will put him out through at least the All-Star break. It's probably about 60-40 that he'll come back and make a positive impact over the final two months of 2008.

It looks like the Beaners have the toughest schedule for the remainder of the season. The Pickle Weasels have the easiest schedule by far. The look to move up in the standings. Here are my predictions for the final standings. The Beaners made the biggest drop (dropping two spots) while the Pickle Weasels made the biggest jump (up two spots). This should make for an interesting three weeks.
1) Full Flanull
2) Poppers
3) Pickle Weasels
4) FKAky
5) Beaners
6) Box Chowers
7) Utility Men
8) Heaters
9) Diggleturb
10) Slumpbusters
The battle for the last spot could be determined on the final week as Calvin and Dustin square off against each other. That should make for an interesting matchup.

Baseball Video Games?
I have been playing MLB 2k7 for the PS3 and it is awesome. I havent had a chance to play MLB The Show 07 yet so I wanted to see if anyone else has. If so, is it worth buying or renting?
I am hoping that some day that they will incorporate fantasy baseball into one of the games. I think this would be a great feature. How cool would it be to track your fantasy team through your video game, like player updates and game lines??

Elijah Dukes was told not to show up at the ballpark Wednesday, with manager Joe Maddon characterizing it as a "personal day."

I would like to end with a baseball quote today.
"...remember the final two words in our National Anthem. 'Play Ball'." - Tom Brokaw
Week 9 Results
3.5 Brian's Box Chowers
8.5 Andy's Full Flanull
Oooo, what's that smell? Oh, it's the stinky hitting from both teams. Andy pulled it out with his pitching.
8.0 Jim's Beaners
4.0 Todd's Heaters
Jim knocks Todd into a tie for last place with Dusty. Bummer for Todd, he actually had a pretty good week. Jim just have a slightly better one. Jim is coming on strong. He's tied for second.
4.0 Kelley's FKAKY
8.0 Prothero's Poppers
Jason takes the week with huge hitting and takes just enough pitching to win.
7.0 Calvin's Slumpbusters
5.0 Dustin's Diggleturb
Wierd week for Calvin. Calvin rode his 19 HRs (whoa) to a victory and got out of the basement. The wierd thing was that with 19 HRs he hit only 36 RBI and he hit .240. Those must have been the only hits he had all week!
7.0 Matt's Utility Men
5.0 Dan's Pickle Weasels
Pitching won the week for Matt. Dan just needed to find a HR and a Save somewhere and he would have had the tie. Close week.
We are at the halfway point in the season. Here's how everything stands:

1 Prothero's Poppers 7 2 0 0.778
